L’Officiel Arabia: Yasmine, tell us about yourself.
Yasmine Kateb: I am Syrian/Lebanese born in Homs, Syria and raised in Cotonou Benin Africa. I moved to the US at the age of seven. I have been doing photography since 2011. I started out in front of the lens and I switched to being a photographer. I have always wanted to push the boundaries of traditional photography and to prove myself as a hard working person in this cutthroat industry. I moved out to LA to expand my horizons.
LOA: What is it like photographing yourself for this cover when you haven’t been in front of the camera for years?
YK: Photographing myself for this cover was very special for me because very rarely you get to see the face of the photographer behind the camera. I am not trying to be a model, I am showcasing that any creative can put themselves out there. I want to inspire creatives that there is no limits to the arts, all you have to do is get started.
LOA: What advice would you give to emerging artists?
YK: Even in your darkest times, there is vulnerability in that. I would channel that pain into creating something beautiful. Even the happy times, use that energy to sharing something meaningful. Emotions are our tools for storytelling. What kind of story you want to tell?
LOA: What is success to you?
YK: For me success is tuning out the negativity from the world and fully accepting yourself for who you are and what you stand for. It’s finding the ability to believe in yourself even when all odds are against you. If you believe you can, you will succeed.
LOA: What has been a highlight for you in your career?
YK: Amongst having a solo gallery exhibit, being sponsored by Canon is one of my most memorable highlights.
LOA: Who is your favorite brand you have shot for?
YK: It has always been a dream of mine to photograph for Guess. This opportunity changed my life in so many positive ways. Paul Marciano and everyone at Guess has become my family. Ive shot many worldwide campaigns with them.
LOA: Who inspires you?
YK: My mom has sacrificed the world for me to see me succeed. She has always been my number one. She has guided and has taught me so many valuable lessons along the way. My dad and brother have contributed their support and love from day one. I will forever be grateful for my family.
LOA: How would you describe your photography?
YK: I would describe my photography style as a fine balance of sexy and classy captured in a timeless manner.
LOA: Who are some celebrities you loved photographing?
YK: I have had the opportunity to work with some of the most incredible people. To name a few Romeo Santos, G- Eazy, Christian Nodal, Belinda, Dane Cook, Jason Lee Lewis, DVBBS, and Tamer Hosny.
LOA: What’s the most rewarding thing that comes with photography?
YK: There’s nothing as rewarding to me as watching a person’s face light up after capturing their images. I love the process of working side by side with my team while creating magic together. Watching the vision unfold together is an extremely powerful experience.
