Name after the intersection of its location: Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue, the Wiltern Theatre was built in 1931 alongside the adjoining, twelve-story pellissier building, by architect Stiles O. Clements of Morgan, Walls & Clements.

Originally designed as a Vaudeville Theater but initially opened as the Warner Brothers Western Theater - a movie palace - the instantly recognizable blue-green terra-cotta complex is a fine example of art deco in the United States. Its steel-reinforced concrete facade features narrow windows and vertical neon signs illuminating the marquee. The interior, designed by G. Albert Lansburgh, boasts opulent murals, decorative plaster and tile work alongside the auditorium's centerpiece - the theater's signature art deco sunburst ceiling.

Since its opening, the Wiltern Theater has experienced several transformations but today thrives as a prominent venue home to performances by Prince (1986), James Brown (1991), Neil Young (1999), Nina Simone (2000), Beck (2002/ 1999), Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (2002/ 1998/ 1990), Bob Dylan (2002), The Rolling Stones (2002), Blur (2003/ 1996), Lou Reed (2003/ 1996), Iggy & The Stooges (2007), Amy Winehouse (2007), B.B. King (2008/ 2001), Sonic Youth (2010/ 2009/ 1995), The Strokes (2019, 2016) and Patti Smith (2022/ 2016, 2012).
