Headed for the road, Dsquared2’s worldwide wanderer is destined for the places he’s already travelled in his mind. The Pre-Fall 22 collection is the wardrobe for the journey, mixed with the pieces he found on the way. His suitcase is a mashup of his favourite travelling style, and new looks inspired by the possibilities of the places to be discovered. One day he’s outdoors under the falling leaves of nature never seen, another meeting new friends on a rooftop towering amongst a foreign city’s skyscrapers.
The collection plays on layering colour, pattern and Dsquared2 key styles. Outerwear becomes a trusted travel buddy—the memories of his trip will star the statement coat thrown over every look. Signature puffers, shearlings and padded nylon block colour parkas are oversized with a 70s attitude. A long denim coat and a velour zipped jacket are the top layer on retro looks of jeans and washed-out jeans, over a swirl patterned anorak, or a check shirt. Dark tan suede and oxblood and midnight blue leather jackets have a favourite, lived-in look. For unexpected nights in new towns, there’s a black velour bomber glistening with silver glitter, its glam attitude more rock and roll worn with faded patched jeans and denim shirt, and evening jackets in raspberry velvet or metallic jacquard lurex.
Bohemian style knits include braided scarves, buttoned sweaters with llamas, and hand-knitted effect crewnecks layered over check shirts and faded, patched, and repaired denim—or as designed as the sleeves of a pale blue denim jacket. Sweatshirts are longer than the velvet cord jackets they sit under. Horizontal stripes are appliquéd to a leather jacket, a hybrid shirt parka, and a hooded tunic shirt. An Americana folk graphic multi-colour print on a white turns up on a shirt, as patches on jeans and patterns in knits.
Campers decorate their backpacks and jeans with souvenir patches collected on the way. Accessories add an extra layer of a freewheeling style to the journey. Polished leather hiking boots and nylon duffles are designed for when it’s time to change course. For hanging out in a new favourite place, there’s double buckled slides that slip easily over mouliné socks, soft front zip boots, woollen beanies, and cross body utilitarian belt bags to fit in the day’s essentials.
Everyday tailoring has the same irreverent elegance as the collection, fine wools in narrow or tapered three-piece suits that can be mixed with denim shirts and chunky sneakers. Black tonal sequins outline and light up the collars or sleeves of other evening jackets, some worn with jeans. A double-breasted tuxedo features the jacket in a rich blue patterned jacquard with contrast black satin lapels and wider leg pants.
