The Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II Redefines the Meaning of Luxury Vehicles
There are few things in life that go together as perfectly as Rolls-Royce and the Côte d’Azur. The aspirational pairing is the epitome of beauty, high class and premium luxury - the stuff of dreams. So it’s no coincidence then that the iconic British car manufacturer held its recent Phantom Rendezvous event in the picturesque French Riviera.
This was a celebration to mark the launch of the new Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II at the exclusive Maybourne Riviera Hotel in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. It’s a fitting five-star location that’s built out of the side of a mountain overlooking Monaco. It has exceptional, and unrestricted views across a coastline that stretches from France to Italy. Maybourne Riviera Hotel is a modern classic - much like the new Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II.
With timeless elegance and looks to die for, the new Phantom Series II is a familiar sight. Rolls-Royce isn’t ripping up the rule book when it comes to its new vehicle and the familiar lines and curves of the Phantom have been finessed rather than changed. The grille is now illuminated at night, the steering wheel is slightly thicker and the headlights have laser-cut stars on them. However, Rolls-Royce wants every customer to have a Phantom Series II that represents them and no-one else.
At the hotel, we were introduced to the “10 Exemplers” that were commissioned by Rolls-Royce to showcase the level of customisation it is capable of. From “The Aristocrat”, which extends the Phantom Series II to add more comfort and space for those that like to be chauffeured around, to “The Extrovert” a bold take that adds eye-catching colours and details for those that like to be seen. Each Phantom is carefully crafted and created with the client’s needs in mind. So, as Rolls-Royce says they don’t just get ‘the best car in the world’, but ‘the best car for them and their world.
Customisation aside, the Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II is the benchmark for precision engineering and luxury. It’s unrivalled. And as soon we get behind the wheel of one to head down the coast, it’s easy to see why people fall in love with these dream machines. They might be big, but the Phantom Series II handles beautifully and responds in kind to anyone that wishes to test its ferocious acceleration. It’s head-turner, sure, but its greatness is much more than its cosmetics.

A coffee stop in the quaint village of Gourdon offered a chance to enjoy the Phantom Series II in more traditional surroundings. And despite these vehicles being a modern technical marvel, its a testament to the designers at Rolls-Royce that it doesn’t look out of place. Showing its chameleon-like abilities, the Phantom Series II fits in perfectly with the subdued surroundings of Gourdon as it does the modernist backdrop of Monte Carlo.
Without going back to the drawing board for dramatic changes, the Phantom Series II still manages to stay ahead of the pack in the luxury vehicle stakes by subtly upgrading features. There’s aspirational and then there’s Rolls-Royce.
