Up Close - Sayo

Sayo is a successful model from Japan. In her ten years in the industry, Sayo has been a part of many television commercials, advertising campaigns and has also featured on the cover of various international magazines.

Sayo, how would you describe your own personal style?

I have two very different extremes. I love to dress in some very exclusive pieces, but believe it or not I prefer a nice T-shirt and jeans. Being comfortable is what it's all about so at home I'm relaxing in a tracksuit or a robe.

What are your most admirable qualities?

I don’t let words from the outside world get to me, which is a rare talent for the Japanese.

I have a sense of urgency when it comes to getting things done. I do not like procrastination.

I'm honest and have integrity with all my interactions with others.

How did you get into the fashion industry?

I've always wanted to wear gorgeous clothes and swimsuits so when I filmed “A Dress” I knew fashion was my destiny.

Where do you pull inspiration from when it comes to fashion and your own personal style?

Fashion models and trends from Italy and Paris have always spoken to my soul. I pull a lot of my inspiration from reading magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and L’Officiel. Social media has changed the way to observe and be involved with fashion. I love seeing how creative influencers are and it allows me to pull certain things I like from each person and include it in my personal wardrobe.

What are your favorite moments in fashion?

To me, Marilyn Monroe had the most iconic moments in fashion and made an impact on history. Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys was also the epitome of style and grace. I love the vintage glam that Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn portrayed.

Where do you see yourself in the industry in the next 5 years?

In the next 5 years I hope to continue releasing photos that inspire people with my style and efforts to elevate the industry. I want to continue helping brands promote their ideas through my creative expression.

What do you want to leave behind for people to remember you?

I don’t have the same figure as most fashion models so I want to create works of art that portray my own personal style while still being sexy. I want people to feel sexy in their own bodies and promote a sense of body positivity.

How do you compare your style now from 5 years ago?

My style is ever-changing, and has evolved over the years. My taste in the clothes I put on has changed drastically. I’m way more confident with what I put on today and it shows in my work.

How do you show your personality through fashion?

I think the anatomy of colors is very important when it comes to fashion. It amazes me that you can put on a certain color and the whole mood changes. There are certain colors that I put on that give me a boost of confidence so when I enter the room people notice.

If there's one thing you could change about the fashion industry what would it be?

I would change the thoughts around sustainability and environmental impact. We should start looking at the supply chain end to end and being able to openly discuss that with the consumer. Choice is very important these days.

Do you follow trends OR Do you like to create your own?

Trying new things is always fun,  but I enjoy looking for fashion that favors my taste while incorporating today's trends.

What people do you look up to, and who inspires you the most?

I have the utmost respect for my parents. We come from an ordinary family, but my parents are so rich at heart. I also am inspired by people who challenge the status quo.
