Tashkeel resident artist, Ines Pedras investigates cultures, innovation and architectural futurism in in her solo exhibition in Dubai.

In ‘Geometric Integrity,’ opening on 24 May, the Spanish architect and artist takes inspiration from the UAE’s dunes and skyscrapers.

Tashkeel has presented ‘Geometric Integrity’, a solo exhibition by Ines Pedras a Spanish architect and artist. The exhibition is the culmination of Inés’ long-term residency, having been hosted by Tashkeel in partnership with Acción Cultural Española and the Embassy of Spain in the UAE, and organised in parallel with the Spanish participation in Expo 2020.

Interested in fusing mathematical sciences and visual art, Inés used her residency to pursue a journey of experimental investigations around Arabian architecture and geometry, while also exploring the bonds between Arab and Spanish culture. Pedras’ work has been inspired in parts by the topography of her rocky native home of Spain, as well as the iconic sand dunes, skyscrapers and structures of the UAE.

Inés explains, “In ‘Geometric Integrity’, I sought to accentuate the spirit of innovation encapsulated in geometry, the essence of which sits deep within our collective subconsciousness and is the root of all creation. My creative process was deeply intuitive, materializing in the form of an integrated three-dimensional model.”

Inés adds that it was her intention to prompt viewers to consider geometric optimisation by using a system of patterns, connections and structures in a quest to attain maximum creative spatial capacity in relation to the material surface and parameter. She says that work on display is the result of both manual and digital experimentation, which allows for a quick exploration and an easy understanding of the properties of the material and systems.

Prior to joining Tashkeel’s Residency Program, Inés had contributed to award-winning projects around the world as part of architectural teams, including the refurbishment of the Tokyo and Japan Paralympic Games venues in 2018.

Tashkeel’s artist residencies are an opportunity for collaboration and community development. During her residency, Ines also presented other talks, workshops, and guided tours with Tashkeel throughout March. Topics she covered included Bio-digital architecture and 3D structures. She also made full use of the facilities and equipment provided by the art house to create the pieces for her exhibition.

Lisa Ball-Lechgar, Deputy Director of Tashkeel, says, “It was a pleasure to host Inés at our studios, and we believe that the bold and fascinating work she has produced is a testament to the success of the Residency Program. The aim is to support and nurture artists, while providing the freedom within the space to experiment and build experience, and Inés made the most of her time here absorbing the architecture and culture of the UAE, while also interacting with other artists and art enthusiasts in person or through her workshops and blog.”

‘Geometric Integrity’ will run at the gallery in Tashkeel Nad Al Sheba 1, Dubai, from 24 May to 21 June 2022. The exhibition opens from Sunday to Thursday daily, and Fridays from 9am to 12pm. Saturdays are closed, and admission is free. Booking in advance is essential via email [email protected] or call +971 4 336 3313.
