After two years of navigating relentlessly choppy seas, the cruise industry which was one of the sectors of tourism hardest hit by the pandemic is forecasting significantly smoother sailing ahead. Facing persistent pandemic pressures and increasingly urgent demands around climate action, industry innovation and adaptation has been the name of the game.
Cruise lines have implemented stringent health and safety measures in response to the pandemic, which the President and CEO of Celebrity Cruises Lisa Lutoff-Perlo says are “some of the highest levels of Covid 19 mitigation compared to virtually any other commercial setting.”
Those measures include vaccination mandates, pre-cruise testing, advanced ventilation systems, deep-cleaning protocols, and the elimination of hightouch surfaces (for instance, buffets are now manned by crew rather than self-served).
The Beyond, which Celebrity touts as its largest and most luxurious ship to date, set sail on a Western Europe cruise from Southampton, England on April 27 for 10 nights with Kate McCue at the helm. Celebrity Cruises president and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo said that McCue mirrors “the exceptional design and imagination” of the ship by constantly going the extra mile. We had the opportunity to experience the ship two days before it set sail with the first guests onboard from Southampton, England.
The 1,073-foot-long vessel, which will be able to host 3,260 passengers in 1,646 staterooms is the third ship in the Royal Caribbean Group subsidiary’s Edge Series.
With award winning designer Kelly Hoppen CBE, The Beyond also boasts a rooftop garden and resort deck with pools that project for swimming suspended above the sea; a multi level bar dubbed the “Sunset Bar;” a Daniel Boulud restaurant; a redesigned “Grand Plaza” to span multiple decks; and the “Magic Carpet,” an open-air moving venue that hovers above the sea and shifts position, much like an elevator, changing purpose based on which of the 13 levels it visits.
The Celebrity Cruises app with its intuitive features like early check-in, time-saving safety drills, and comprehensive pre-cruise planning, is designed to make your vacation smarter and more luxurious before you even step on board.
